THE East African Kiswahili Commission (EAKC) has commended Tanzania Standard (Newspapers) Limited (TSN) for promoting Kiswahili language through one of its publications, ‘HabariLeo.’
EAKC and TSN have agreed to work together to promote Kiswahili in the East African Community (EAC) and beyond.
EAKC Executive Secretary, Prof Kenneth Simala welcomed TSN’s move to promote the language through its publication, stressing that Kiswahili is an official language for EAC. Prof Simala added that the Article 137 of the EAC Treaty provides Kiswahili as the community’s common language.
The EAKC boss made the remarks yesterday when he met and held talks with TSN’s Managing Editor, Dr Jim Yonazi at the commission’s office in Zanzibar.
Prof Simala said currently, there are other countries around the world that have taken steps to use Kiswahili which include German, Russia, China, South Korea, Japan and United States, with others teaching the language in their education institutions.
On the other hand, Dr Yonazi said TSN through its Kiswahili paper, ‘HabariLeo’ is focused on promoting the language in East Africa.
Dr Yonazi said TSN publishes a special education of ‘HabariLeo’ and ‘Daily News’ every Tuesday, covering EAC issues targeting the community readership. “We intend to have cooperation with the EAKC for the benefit of the community.
The collaboration between EAKC and TSN in promoting Kiswahili will benefit all EAC member states in reaping the benefit of the language,” Dr Yonazi noted.
He also presented a photograph of the organisation’s EAC special edition of ‘HabariLeo.’ Prof Simala presented the TSN boss with a book detailing the community’s strategic plan.
Last month, the EAKC organised an international conference in Zanzibar to celebrate achievements recorded, including working closely with the media in EAC partner states, resulting in the establishment of the Association of Kiswahili Media Practitioners.
Other achievements include the renovation of its headquarters and the development of its first Strategic Plan 2017-2022. The commission and the strategic plan were officially launched at the conference.
